Alexander Deiters

Alex is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh and founding Director of the Institute for Synthetic Biology. He is also a member of the Hillman Cancer Center and several interdisciplinary programs at Pitt and the Center for Nucleic Acids Science & Technology at CMU. Alex has published >200 peer-reviewed papers, authored six book chapters and numerous review articles, delivered 180+ research seminars, and consulted for pharmaceutical companies. Alex serves on the editorial boards of ChemBioChem, ChemPhotoChem, and Scientific Reports, has guest-edited multiple journal special issues, and was a standing member of NIH’s SBCB and CBP study sections. Alex received several awards, including a Cottrell Scholar Award, a Beckman Young Investigator Award, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, an American Cancer Society Research Scholar Award, an Innovator Award from the University of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Award from the American Chemical Society, a Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award from the University of Pittsburgh, and an ACS Cope Scholar Award.  Several of the compounds and reagents that his group developed are now commercially available. Alex has been granted several patents and technologies that he co-developed have been licensed to biotech companies. Alex has trained 100+ students, postdocs, and undergraduates, and has co-advised several of Pitt’s iGEM teams. Click here for more information on his research.
